JRiver MC
JRiver Media Center (MC) is a comprehensive media player for Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems from company JRiver, Inc. It supports audio and video playback of both stereo and multi-channel content. In addition, it comes with various digital signal processing tools. myHRTF Personalized Filters can be loaded in the Convolution section of the DSP Studio and applied to music and movies in realtime. More information about JRiver MC can be found here.
JRiver MC offers two different ways to use myHRTF Personalized Filters, the integrated convolution processor and VST plugins as described below. Soundwise there is no difference but switching between different configurations that are included in myHRTF Personalized Filters tends to be easier with the plugin.
The software presented on this webpage has been tried and tested by us. However, please do note that it comes from a third party that is not connected to myHRTF in any way. Hence, we cannot guarantee that this software will work on your PC or laptop as described.
Installation
Download the latest version of JRiver MC here and install it on your PC or laptop.
Configuration for stereo with integrated convolution
- Go to the Player menu and select DSP Studio....
- Tick and go to Parametric Equalizer, click Add... and select Adjust the volume.
- Set the Gain to -10 dB. For stereo, keep Channels at Left;Right (default), for multi-channel you may tick more channels as required.
- Tick and go to Convolution and load the configuration file of choice from myHRTF Personalized Filters for JRiver MC by clicking Browse. You may choose the configuration file independent from the sampling rate since this will be taken care for by JRiver MC automatically as described below.
- Untick Normalize filter volume since this has been taken care for during the design of myHRTF filters already.
- Only tick Use small filters to reduce latency when you plan to watch movies with JRiver MC, otherwise leave it unticked.
- Tick Automatically switch filter based on input format, see Sampling rate section for details (below).
- Select Flat line overflows to avoid unnecessary clip protection since myHRTF Personalized Filters are free from clipping by design, see Signal clipping section for details (below).
- Confirm by clicking Done.

Now, all music and movie files that you play are filtered using myHRTF Personalized Filters. You my change the filters at any time by loading a different filter configuration as described above.
Configuration for stereo with plugin
For stereo sound reproduction we recommend to use the VST3 plugin Convology XT by company Wave Arts. This convolution plugin allows easy switching between different configurations that are included in myHRTF Personalized Filters with visual support. Convology XT can be downloaded here for free. The configuration of Convology XT with myHRTF Personalized Filters is described here.

Signal clipping
Setting the filter gain to -10 dB (i.e. 10 dB attenuation) as described above, the clipping of audio signals is virtually impossible since the required headroom has been taken into account during the design of myHRTF Personalized Filters.
Latency
Latency is the time delay between start of a sound event and its output at the audio interface. JRiver MC in combination with myHRTF Personalized Filters for TV and Gaming feature sufficiently low latency for movies, TV and gaming.
Sampling rate
Using JRiver MC with myHRTF configurations as described above, the filtering will be adapted to the sampling rate automatically. However, do note the supported sampling rates of myHRTF Personalized Filters as specified here.
